As estimated, in present days in the area of Prijedor Municipality 110 000 people live (132 residents per km²) out of which number 48% is urban population and 52% is rural.

According to official records of the Municipal Department for Social Affairs, in the area of Prijedor Municipality in year of 1991 there were 49 454 Bosniaks (43.97%), 47 754 Serbs (42.46%), 6 300 Croats (5.60%) and 8 971 (7.98%) residents of other ethnicity.

Natural migration, growth and biological reproduction of population have a great influence on
economic and demographic development, and vital and existential interest of every country and nation. In period 1999-2002 many negative trends in population migration of Prijedor Municipality have become evident. That being said primarily refers to a low birth-rate and a death-rate increase. A growth-rate in number of contracted marriages in period from year 2002 has slightly increased whilst a divorce rate has significantly decreased therefore it can be said that in the forthcoming period positive trends of population growth in Prijedor Municipality are to be expected.

There are 17 000 refugees and displaced persons and 24 000 returnees currently residing in Prijedor Municipality. Many people of other ethnicity also reside in Prijedor – Checks, Romanians, Slovenians, Ukrainians, and Roma, etc. 

During its developing years Prijedor had been mostly characterized as a commercial centre particularly after construction of a railway road that had provided communication between Banja Luka and Zagreb in 1873 thus significantly contributing to municipal development.

Stream of strong municipal development occurred shortly after the World War II with principal bearers of its development - Iron Mines Ljubija Co. and Celpak Celluloses & Paper Co.
Significant deposits of mineral raw material and mineral waters of the Iron Mines Ljubija Co. in the area provide for immensely attractive investment potential hence opening possibility for joint partnership venture entailing economic investments.

For its geographical position the area of Prijedor Municipality falls under moderate-continental climate. Climate is modified primarily under influence of relief, and special part in it stems from feature of Kozara Mountain which fences off most of the vast Prijedor area from direct influence of air mass coming from Pannonia basin. Valley of River Sana and River Gomjenica also open up encircled valley to streams of air from the south-east and southern side. These streams greatly influence higher mobility of air masses in the lower parts of Prijedor encircled valley - which is characterized by a very frequent and long-term mist. Average monthly temperature varies from minus 1.1ºC in January to 20.1ºC in July, with the absolute minimum of minus 30ºC in January, and the absolute maximum 40ºC in August.

Throughout the year there are in average 80 days with temperature higher than 25ºC, and approximately 90 days with temperature below 0ºC, or 200 days with temperature below 12ºC.

A year amount of fallout is 979 litres per m². Throughout the year there are approximately 60 days of fair weather, and approximately 150 days of cloudy days while the rest of the days are misty as a result of vicinity of River Sana. Snow falls for 26 days, in average, with snow cover durable up to approximately 45 days. 

Winds blow from all directions yet northern and northern-west directions are most dominant. In general geographical location and natural conditions are quite affirmative for city’s life and development.
