Guide trough Prijedor

Sana river

The basic hydrographic feature of Prijedor municipality is the Sana river with its tributaries. The Sana river springs up near Medna in Ribnik municipality and it flows into the Una river in Novi Grad municipality. Its course connects six municipalities, which are Ribnik, Kljuc, Sanski Most, Ostra Luka, Prijedor and Novi Grad. A legend says that the name has its origin in Latin word sana meaning healthy.In the past the Sana river was of great importance for Prijedor because of its navigability which brought opportunities for trading. In the 19th century, Prijedor’s merchant fleet had more than 70 boats, each with 20-ton capacity

Many kinds of fish, such as trout and huchen can be found in the upper course of the Sana river. In the middle and lower course of the river carp, sheatfish, perch and rudd can be found.

The Gomjenica river, a right tributary of the Sana river, in its lower course flows trough Prijedor. It has fan-shaped basin, what makes a higher concentration of water.

The Puharska river has a torrential character and it never dries up. In the lower course it has been regulated and channeled into an open sewer. 
In the area of Prijedor municipality there are 4 lakes:

    • Sanicani, an artificial lake - fishpond. The Sanicani fishpond was established in 1903, and in addition to its main activity of fish production, it runs a commercial hunting area of 40 km². Small game, wild ducks, pheasants and other birds are hunted here;
    • Ljubija, an artificial lake is located 15 km south west of Prijedor;
    • Tomasica, is located 20 km south of Prijedor;
    • Gradina, is located 25 km south east of Prijedor.
